Speaking of things coming back to haunt, I think my old livejournal is alive and kicking. I'd delete it, but years worth of mindless drivel is hard to just get rid of at a whim. Having said that, it's a pretty depressing read on a number of levels...

Thankfully the first page of my name only links to a gynaecologist :)

Admittedly, I haven't played many MMORPGs, but it sounds like an idea. In fact I'd wager it's in the works as we speak (sorry).

Some things that crossed my mind:

- I'd imagine there'd need to be some "creeps" to kill when you're not killing your rivals (e.g. those Quintessons you mentioned). I think in the recent Warhammer MMORPG it was purely race vs. race though, so as long as there are enough players to kill and bases to raze then it should be fine.

- How would the PvP work? From what I remember in WoW you basically clicked on the enemy and you would automatically engage, allowing you to cast spells / perform special abilities as you attacked. Not quite my cup of tea, but I was never a big MMORPG fan. Anyway, it'd probably be better to have TransformersMMORPG in "fake real-time" ala Mass Effect or in "real real-time" ala Age of Conan.

- For some reason I can see a bias towards choosing the flight transformation specialty - I guess you'd offset this by putting higher requirements on the class e.g. additional abilities have higher experience requirements, they consume more energon etc.

- You'd probably also have a military-type class system as well, since it is a war after all. E.g. Recon and Intel, Support, Assault, Engineering etc.

- This might also be an opportunity to introduce some new IP into the mix...new races, robot factions, sentient programs?

and yes, good to see you back *thumbs up*

About bloody time you posted!

Interesting ideas! I have to say that cheap and nasty products are great when you are time poor. I would have loved to do more DIY stuff... but who has the time and equipment to do it these days?

I found your post via my standing Google search for items involving Clayton Christensen and disruptive innovation. I think you raise very good points here regarding the potential impact of low-cost easy-to-use fabrication technologies. The open source software movement is a potential model for how this will play out, since here again we have a similar combination of factors, including a move to products as "instantiated information", ease of distributing and collaborating on designs, and so on. UI and overall user experience design is proving to be a critical element in the open source space, since most open source developers are mediocre designers at best; I anticipate good ID people playing the same role in the area of DIY fabrication.

Another point you did not mention, but which I think is critical, is that most if not all future products will not just be "instantiated information", they will also be "information-aware" in the sense of having an inherent software and communications component (made possible by low-cost ubiquitous computing and networking components). Thus open source software development will converge with open source design and manufacturing, and the role of the designer will become even more critical IMO.

shit, mate.
talk about faeces dropped from great heights. seems to be a nasty occurrence with a few people lately.

One believes their life is a tragedy, til they compare it with the real world.

if you do manage to get it all under control (I HAVE FAITH), come out on the long weekend for a bbq and a beer. i, for one, am good to get temporarily shitfaced by then.

profound (y0)

pretty much agree with you on your points, especially the respecting objects comment (chop and his CD lovin' come to mind).

when you realise that you don't need shit then that's a sign you're getting old. you old man, you. at least the lack of your need for shiny new products of consumerism isn't driving you into irrepairable debt. ;)

Shit, lost my last comment =(

Basically I was saying that ABIT did something similar when resetting the mobo's CMOS:

But yes, interesting concept. Computers need more switches under flaps.
